A water vapor electric fireplace can look simple from the room: illuminated mist rises through media and creates a three-dimensional flame effect without a wood or gas fire. Behind that effect, however, the product may need a refill tank, a cold-water connection, specific water treatment, a heater path and regular access to components that collect mineral scale.
Choose the visible effect only after choosing that hidden ownership system. The exact model—not the words water vapor—must tell you whether it supplies heat, how water reaches the mist maker and how the reservoir, shutoff, air path and service parts remain reachable after the surround is finished. If any one of those fields is missing, the model is not ready for the cart.
The mist effect is only one part of the appliance
Current Dimplex Optimyst and Aquafire product owners describe the basic effect in similar terms: fine water mist is illuminated to create the appearance of flame and smoke. There is no room combustion flame in that effect, so the product does not need a chimney to exhaust combustion gases. That does not tell you whether a separate electric heater is present, what electrical path the appliance requires or what its installation manual allows.
It also does not identify one physical product format. The current Dimplex Optimyst category includes cassettes, prebuilt boxes, linear fireplaces, inserts and a freestanding stove. A bare cassette intended for a custom feature is a different project from an enclosed firebox or plug-in stove, even when the mist technology is related.
Start with the broader types of electric fireplaces if the wall, opening or floor format is still undecided. On this page, assume that water vapor is already the preferred visual technology and test whether one exact model’s utilities and maintenance fit the room.
Heat is a model field, not a water-vapor feature
Some water-vapor products are ambiance appliances. Others add an electric heater, either as part of the firebox or as a documented accessory. Treat those as different purchase paths.

The distinction is visible in current first-party sources. Dimplex’s CDFI500-PRO technical specification lists flame-only operation and names a separate Optimyst heater as an optional accessory. The current Optimyst Linear page describes an included supplemental heater and a flame-without-heat mode. Aquafire’s current FAQ says its products create the look of fire without heat.
None of those statements transfers to a look-alike model. If heat matters, use the electric fireplace heat and output guide to define the supplemental role, then bring the exact water-vapor candidate’s watts, controls and air path into the decision.
Choose the water path you are willing to own
A manual reservoir avoids a permanent water line, but it makes refilling part of ordinary use. Direct water removes that refill trip only when the exact series offers a documented kit or connection. It also creates a shutoff, connection and leak-inspection responsibility that must remain accessible.

The current Dimplex CDFI500-PRO/CDFI1000-PRO manual makes both paths explicit. The cassettes include refill containers; a plumbing path can use the named accessory kit or standard 1/4-inch tubing. The same section calls for a nearby cold-water line and an accessible connection so the supply can be shut off for scheduled maintenance. That is model-scoped evidence, not a generic recipe for another unit.
Aquafire uses different language. Its current FAQ describes filling through supplied tubing or connecting eligible Original and Pro configurations to direct water with the applicable kit. It also says not to pour water directly into the internal tanks. The practical distinction is between the documented fill method and the documented permanent-water option—not between “automatic” and “manual” words on a seller card.
Water quality is equally model-bound. Dimplex’s cited cassette manual permits normal tap water when it is not hard and points to softened or filtered water when it is hard. Aquafire says to use tap water but not hard water without its documented softening path. Do not replace either owner with a universal instruction to use distilled, softened or untreated tap water. Record the site water condition and follow the exact current manual.
The enclosure must preserve the maintenance route
A water-vapor fireplace is a small water system inside an electric appliance. The mist maker, reservoir, fill path, filters, fans and sensors do not stop existing when the surround looks finished. Access is therefore a design input, not a repair problem to discover later.
The Dimplex cassette manual requires the housing to be level and an air opening to be maintained. Its current service manual links weak or rolling mist to insufficient air intake, and it treats mineral buildup on the mist outlet or emitter as a maintenance condition. A surround that blocks make-up air, traps the top covers or hides the water shutoff can defeat the intended service path even when the visible opening is attractive.
Aquafire’s current guidance makes the owner-hours visible. The FAQ suggests three to five quick cleanings per year depending on use. Its preventive-maintenance guide specifies mist-maker cleaning every three months and an entire-system cleaning every six months for the current line. Those intervals are not a category-wide schedule, but they prove that “just add water” is not a complete maintenance plan.
Before finish work, draw the route for five ordinary actions: refill or isolate the water; remove the access panel, drawer or media named by the manual; reach the mist-maker/reservoir area; drain or remove standing water as the owner directs; and reach the electrical/service owner without demolishing fixed finish. If the exact documents do not show how one of those actions happens, keep that field unknown and ask the manufacturer before the enclosure is closed.

These examples are not a ranking. They show why a water-vapor category page cannot make the final purchase decision.

A useful comparison keeps the labels exactly as the owners publish them. It does not turn an optional heater into included heat, call a fill pump a direct-water connection or apply one brand’s water treatment to another. Put the ownership fields on the cart line

The accepted result should be ordinary and specific: “This exact model is for ambiance only, uses its documented refill container with the approved water, fits the opening and electrical path, and the drawer, air opening and cleaning route remain accessible.” Change the water or heat path only when the same exact owner supports it. If a seller image or another model is filling one of the blanks, leave the candidate on hold. The blank is part of the product.
